Dear Suzuki Community: As we close off this fiscal year here in the SAA, I want to send a simple thank you. I’ve now been a part of the Suzuki Association for a year and a half. When I started here, I was most struck by the passion of our community. Since then, I’ve only grown more appreciative of each members’ commitment to our work. This year, we launched the Suzuki Training Committee (STC), which has begun to meet, connect, and build a foundation for having meaningful conversations about our Teacher Development program and how to best support teachers, as well as students and parents. We began planning and preparing for our 2024 conference—our first since the pandemic interrupted our lives. We partnered with Alfred Music to host free online webinars that reached members in our community and offered a platform for connection and learning. We improved our communication efforts, including efforts to better connect with our colleagues based in Canada and Latin America. Most importantly, despite how difficult and challenging it has been for everyone to navigate an ever-changing music education landscape, our members continue to offer their hearts to students and families committed to learning music. You can learn more about our work over the last year in the AGM recording at the link below. I am so proud to be part of the Suzuki family. It is a true privilege to be a part of the SAA. Thank you. Sincerely, Angelica Cortez Executive Director
Today is the LAST day to help us with our year-end fundraiser! Thanks to our incredible community, we’re over halfway toward our goal of raising $5,000 before our fiscal year closes!
Call for Papers Very often, the things that mean the most to us are the things we weren’t expecting to find; we discover them by taking that side road, by scratching that nagging itch. Being an artist and a creative teacher requires you to explore pathways with unknown destinations. For this issue of the ASJ, we’d like to know about your Journeys of Discovery.
The preferred deadline for submissions is September 1, 2023. Our final deadline is September 15, 2023. Manuscript guidelines and the submission form are here: https://suzukiassociation.org/news/guidelines/ To share ideas, general inquiries, or just to say hi, please contact Andrew Braddock at editor@suzukiassociation.org. Photo Submissions for the ASJ! We all know that you have vibrant and exciting musical lives–and we want to see them! We’d love to feature your photos in the American Suzuki Journal or other SAA publications. Showcase a student, a fun teaching activity, a big concert, your Suzuki events, or anything musical or teaching related! For the cover of the ASJ, photos need to be from a real camera, not just a smartphone (at least 300 dpi). For other images, we prefer photos from real cameras, but smartphone photos can work. You can send in photos through https://wkf.ms/44CH9zC]this form! If you have any questions, please reach out to Andrew Braddock at editor@suzukiassociaiton.org

You can view the replay of this year’s Annual General Meeting on the SAA website. Be sure to log in to access the recording. Welcome to our two newest Board Members! Please join us in thanking them for their willingness to serve the Suzuki Association of the Americas! Araceli Hackbarth Hello! My name is Araceli Hackbarth. I am a Brazilian Music Educator, Music Therapist and Violin teacher by Suzuki Method for the last 14 years. My trajectory with the Method goes back to my childhood. Being a Suzuki student had a profound impact on my life and professional choice. Over the years, I have been building a career as a school director, promoting actions of inclusion, equity and belonging, through teaching by the Method. Since 2015, I participate on the board of the Suzuki Musical Association of Brazil (AMSBrasil), being elected as its President in 2022. As such, besides internal AMSBrasil-related activities, I have actively promoted exchanges between associates and the Suzuki American Association (SAA), and done several different works in partnership with SAA. In 2020, I joined the Suzuki Latin America Associations Committee. All of this has broadened my understanding of the Latin American community, our individual and collective needs, and the importance of collective work. I developed the ability of listening and dialoguing in the quest for solutions. Certainly, my domain of the Portuguese, English and Spanish idioms has helped in achieving this competence! I believe the Latin America Suzuki community, with all its dynamics and importance, have a lot to contribute to SAA. And I am confident that my skills would help SAA to continue integrating this group and building a future for all its community based on greater accessibility, diversity, clearer communication, and better understanding of the different socio-cultural characteristics that constitute the Suzuki community of the Americas. ![]() Dr. Geoffrey B.
